iBleed

"She's not answering questions," a man cloaked in shadow declared, examining the patient through the safety of a two-way mirror. The young woman struggled, tensing up her arms and forcing her upper body upward; trying to break the straps that bound her to the cold, metal slab they forced her onto while unconscious. "I've checked her psych profile. There's no record of violent or hostile behavior. This is all new for her."

Gritting her teeth together until it ached, Carly clenched her eyes shut, her body throbbing all over. Her head pounding, her pulse spiking every second, and her blood boiling in her constricting veins, the young woman began shrieking and screeching deep in her throat. Soon, screams tore through her body, and her thrashing turned into a massive seizure.

"We've gotta do something!" another man; a younger man cried out, only to be held back.

"You go in there, you die," the other man cried out, roughly grabbing his associate by the shoulder. "Leave her. We're taking a risk from here."

"What happened?" a third man asked, watching the girl slowly calm herself.

"No idea," the man answered, not taking his eyes off the teenager. "When our guys showed up, she was the only one breathing. We took her in for questioning. Hour later, the station was a morgue."

_Images played out of the scene; two skeletons partially joined at the waist and bathed in a thick stream of blood and gored flesh lay next to one another, their fingers interlocked in the other body's palm. His eyes lifeless and staring into the horizon, a brunette teenager's mouth was wide open to receive the thick, dark stream of blood oozing from the knife embedded in his skull. A broken display case merged with the burning remains of a young woman in a pink prom dress smoldered in the corner of the scene. A body torn in half around its erect spine sat up amongst the blood and rubble, its face too burned and torn to distinguish. What looked like a jaw partially laced with its gums and teeth was locked onto a wooden book shelf by its upper corner. A large mound of red fluid and an unidentifiable mixture of solid mass struck out from the center of the field of gore and death. Several worn bones from human arms lay mixed in with the hellish structure. Smoke mixed with fire and cascading embers floating among the wreckage. Sitting against a broken wall for support, her body almost entirely covered in fresh blood, Carly silently cried to herself in a fetal position, rocking back and forth. In her hands were thick tufts of hair; the right hand holding blond and the left clenching brown. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she muttered something to herself. Although the day was young, the sun was nowhere in sight when the sirens began flashing._

"I thought the world was a bad place like it was," the man declared, looking away from the girl. "But that...Makes you take a second."

"Yeah," Spencer replied, his voice heavy as he dropped an old photograph of himself and his sister.

That night, the edges of the picture burned, singing away the last memory. Carly cried that night, still bound to the cold, metal slab.
